Thorold, ON —September 8 — Thorold Theatre invites audiences to step back in time to the jazz-filled, scandal-soaked world of the 1920s with its Fall 2025 production, The Sweet Sounds of Murder, an original play by Niagara playwright Tresa Rees.

Set in The Rumrunner Lounge, a glamorous Prohibition-era nightclub, this witty and suspenseful murder mystery delivers an unforgettable blend of intrigue, dark humour, and vintage flair. When a rising starlet’s ambitions clash with secrets, affairs, and rivalries, a shocking murder threatens to silence the music. Can the eccentric Inspector Baker and earnest sidekick Thomas Finley untangle the lies before the killer slips away?

Performances will be held at the elegant La Sila Ballroom at Club Belvedere (57 John St., Thorold), a venue renowned for its marble floors, crystal chandeliers, comfortable seating and great food with an Italian flair.

Performance Date:

  • Saturday, October 25, 2025 – 7:00 PM

Audience members are encouraged to come dressed in their finest 1920’s attire—flapper dresses, pearls, and fedoras—for a speakeasy-inspired costume party. Prizes will be awarded for Best Costume and for correctly guessing the murderer.

“This play is a true celebration of theatre and our community,” said Dan Willis, President of Thorold Theatre. “Tresa Rees’ script captures the sass, wit, and secrets of the Jazz Age”.

About Thorold Theatre

Thorold Theatre has been entertaining audiences in the Niagara Region since 1986. Over the years, we’ve grown into a vibrant, community-focused organization dedicated to bringing high-quality live theatre to our patrons. As a not-for-profit group, we thrive on the support of ticket sales and the generosity of community-minded businesses and individuals.

Embracing New Beginnings: In 2023, we said goodbye to our long-time performance space, but our passion for theatre remains steadfast. Today, as a “Vagabond Theatre,” we embrace the adventure of bringing our productions to new venues across Niagara. This change has inspired creativity and strengthened our bond with the community we love.

Note from a poor, but talented, bunch of vagabonds:

Community theatre doesn’t run on applause alone. We’re working hard, raising money for our next big show — costumes, lights, scripts, snacks, you name it. Chip in or cheer us on at thoroldtheatre.ca/donate
